Lesson – Tell About Yourself: All About Me Book
Original Purpose – This lesson was developed for my elementary ESL students from grades 1-6 to be used over the course of several days during their summer camp. It’s purpose was to teach students how to share information about themselves in English.
Adaptations – This lesson can be adapted to fit the ages, grade level, objectives, English language level and any other variables of your students for your intended purpose.
Objectives – Students will: (a) make a book about themselves (b) tell about themselves (c) tell about their families (d) tell about their homes (e) tell about their favorite things.
Materials – Tell About Yourself: All About Me Book PowerPoint (if no access to a projector and monitor or another source of technology to present, may be presented orally with visual aids), paper, crayons/markers/pencils/ pens/paint, stapler with staples/glue
Presentation – Present the information on each slide, making sure that your students grasp the concepts presented and understand how to use them. Solicit students for the information and allow them to practice giving it orally before engaging in the written portion of the book creation.
My Observations (of my students) – They really enjoyed creating their books and expressing their artistic talents. Some really spent a lot of time on their artwork, especially their self-portraits. Students were able to use their books to help them not only communicate written information about themselves but also to be able to share information in conversation, as well as asking for some of the same information from others in writing and conversation. Indeed, students were able to use their books in other projects and activities which included speaking and writing to different native English speakers in the U.S.
